What is Self, Love? And why do so many struggle with it?
If you Google self-love, you get the description “regard for one’s own well-being and happiness”. They say you must fall in love with yourself before anyone else can. Well, how many people reading this can honestly say hand on heart that you LOVE YOURSELF?
As a nation, we seem to find it so much easier to love and take care of everyone else instead of ourselves and the worst thing is we often don’t even realise we are doing it. We race around to make sure kids have what they need, partners are fed and have clean clothes, not to mention the animals that some have in our lives are taken care of… but when do we STOP? when do we turn the focus back to us? Many will say, oh I don’t have time to sit down… EEKS…. That is worrying. Worrying that we are getting so over-consumed by day-to-day chores and habits that we are not leaving any time for ourselves.
This quote is so true for many, and at what price is it going to take until we realise that maybe we should be doing things a little bit differently?
I am not talking about dropping everything you do or being selfish by telling people NO (although that is a good start). First I would say you need to be mindful of your actions, what you are doing and truthfully ask yourself “Are you doing enough for yourself to LOVE yourself?”
Loving yourself should be easy… I get that if you have kids then you will, of course, put them first, and I understand that jobs and relationships also take up your time. But you deserve to be able to take a hot bath, sit down, read for half an hour or even just take a stroll without feeling like you don’t have the time or feel guilty for doing it because you think you should be doing something else more productive.
What we all need to realise is that WE all matter, YOU matter, and if you don’t start to take better care of yourself then you could find yourself in a situation where you start getting sick and things take a toll for the worse, and at which point, you are no good to anyone. If you can just practice a few lessons of self-love each week, I am confident it would help to balance you.
I get that sometimes it can be challenging to focus just on you, but what if there are things that really need to be looked at and addressed? By always focusing on others, you are constantly distracting yourself instead of looking at what really matters. If you often get easily overwhelmed or don’t know what you’re doing or where you’re going in life, then just get yourself to STOP, be kind and give yourself some love.
I promise there are many that love you and want you to be happy and live a life of joy. But to do that, it is going to take a few acts of kindness for yourself, maybe a few deep breaths and even a couple of coaching sessions…. As a coach, helping people through transition is very gratifying. There are some basic steps we can work on together to get you feeling more peaceful and harmonious about every area of your life, especially YOU. Plus often talking to a stranger can be a good way to help you get your clarity.
Whatever it takes just know that YOU ARE WORTH IT, and when you really fall in love with yourself, by golly will you wish you would have done it sooner.
